Book One: The Past

Written summary: Ian is a student at the Fortress at Ca-dalen, training to become a Knight. He's pretty good, though for only 8 years old, he's a little cocky. He disobeys orders to evacuate when the Fortress is attacked, and though he does so with the best of intentions, he puts everyone in danger. Facing supernatural enemies bent on destroying all the North (and the North Wind) stands for, how can he survive?

Book Two: The Present

Written summary: Talon is a thief of necessity in the slums of Goranga. One night, he steals a plain ring of blue metal, only to find that everyone wants what he has--including a race of half-men, half-animals called "Ayenroki." Both the Four Winds and Ayenroki are supposed to be myths however, and Talon must find a way to survive in a world far larger, and far older, than he ever thought.
